Glaciers grind rock into powder, and the rivers here run grey and heavy with it. Whole valleys get rearranged that way — slowly, without hurry, by something enormous and patient.
That's the standard the work is held to: made of ground-down material, unhurried, with weight behind it.
The mark is an erratic — a boulder the ice carried a long way and set down where it now sits. The two rows of dots beneath it are a scoring track.
